Mary Ann Doane ist Professorin für Modern Culture and Media an der Brown University, wo sie zwischen 1996 und 1997 und von 1998 bis 2000 Leiterin/Dekanin des Instituts Modern Culture and Media war. Sie war auch Mitglied des Vorstands des Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women der Brown University und war Gastdozentin an den Universitäten von New York, Iowa und Chicago. Doane hat an der Cornell University English studiert und hat an der Universität von Iowa in Speech and Dramatic promoviert. Sie ist Spezialistin für Filmtheorie, feministische Theorie und Semiotik.

IKKM Forschungsprojekt

Filmische Maßstäbe, Perspektive und das moderne Erhabene

Die philosophische und ästhetische Auffassung des Erhabenen wird historisch mit Vorstellungen der Grenzenlosigkeit, des Schreckens, Terrors und der Endlosigkeit assoziiert und verbindet Subjektivität und Emotion mit Vorstellungen räumlicher Dimension. Die filmische Darstellung als eine »überlebensgroße« wurde sowohl mit einer Ästhetik des Ausmaßes oder der Größenordnung in Verbindung gebracht, als auch mit Konzepten der Unbeschreibbarkeit und der Unsagbarkeit. Dieser Vortrag verbindet die Strukturierung von Raum im Film, und insbesondere die Verwendung von Perspektive und der Großaufnahme, mit dem Problem der Beziehung des modernen Subjekts zu Kognition, Verortung und Ganzheit.
