Barbara Zahnen

Senior Fellow from January - March 2012
Barbara Zahnen is researcher at the Department of Geography of the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Having studied geography, chemistry and soil science at the Philipps-Universität Marburg and the University of Berne, she achieved her PhD at Humboldt-Universität. In 2003 she received the Humboldt-Award for her Doctoral Thesis "Anwendende Klimatologie zwischen Daten und Deutung, Alltagswelt und Klimaphysik", which combines an empirical climatological study with a reflection on the nature of the study itself via a humanities-based approach. The relations of natural sciences and humanities have since been a focus of Zahnen's work: Currently she is the principal investigator of the research project "Physische Geographie – Sprachlichkeit – Bildlichkeit: Zur Frage des Verstehens der Erdnatur" interrogating processes of performative understanding in the field of physical geography.
